Steps to Familiarize Yourself with the Korean Language

The Korean language is considered to be one of the most difficult languages to learn on earth. There are however, other languages such as Italian that are actually more of a challenge to understand than the Korean language.

But just because Korean is difficult does not mean that it is impossible to know! Learning Korean is not that hard especially if you have the zeal to know it.

You can easily learn how to write and converse in the Korean tongue by sticking to certain guidelines that will help you familiarize with it.

Three Steps on How to Understand Korean Language

  1. Learn the Hangul (Korean Alphabet)

The Korean alphabet, on first sight, looks like an immense sea of scribbling that you will never understand. This is not the case. For you to be able to know how to speak and write this language, you have got to know these alphabets.

They are the first step and your hope of ever understanding this language fully. Hangul contains only 24 letters and this should be a proof that you will have less to deal with as when learning Chinese or Japanese.

One advantage in this language is that it has no hidden pronunciations or sounds as observed in other languages (such as English). You will therefore meet no such surprises and have an easier time in pronouncing the words since most words are pronounced exactly how they are written.

  1. Know How the Words Are Built

Once you know everything about the Hangul, the next step should be knowing how to build words in the Korean language.

There are three kinds of words you will majorly find in the Korean language:

  • Pure Korean words
  • English based words
  • Chinese based words

The writing of words in the Korean is usually alike based on the similarities. For example, you will find that words involving mountains or medicine will have nearly similar structures in how they are written. This therefore makes it easier to learn this beautiful language.

After knowing how to write the words, you will see how it will be easy to read and construct sentences.

Know How the Words Are Built

  1. Practice

One you have acquired the basics, you should do a lot of practice for you to be good at it. You can perfect your skills by:

  • Reading simple Korean books and then advancing to the complex ones as you grow better.
  • Listen or watch Korean programs to get the hang of how they pronounce their words.

Familiarize yourself with as many Korean words as you can. And be patient because this process takes time. Eventually you will become excellent at speaking it.

  • It’s critical to learn according to your learner’s personality if you wish to maximize your time and effort spent studying. Not every learner assimilates a language the same way: Some students do better when they hear Korean conversations regularly. Others tend to excel when they read Hangul often and visualize words that are spoken to them at the same time. Still others are better off writing lines of vocabulary to remember new words and their spelling.

  • Start by choosing which of the methods below best suits you and your interests, skill level and preferred learning style.
